Fall Student Technology Fair

In cooperation with Information Technology & Johns Hopkins (IT@JH), the Academic Technology Group is pleased to announce the first ever Student Technology Fair!  Our goal is to offer technology solutions that help students achieve academic success while here at Johns Hopkins. And, we have received feedback from students requesting that we make information about our products & services more readily available.  We hope that this Technology Fair will do just that.

Representatives from various departments within IT@JH will be onsite to offer information about existing technologies, new services, and the latest trends at Johns Hopkins; as well as answer your questions and troubleshoot technical issues.  So, take some time out of your busy day to stop by and learn about the products and services made available to you.  Some light refreshments will be served.  Registration begins at 10:30 a.m.

Shibboleth -What's It All About?

IT @ Hopkins is working on the deployment of a product call Shibboleth.  Developed under the direction of the Internet2 Middleware initiative, Shibboleth is used when you want to share secured online services or access restricted digital content.  Long term, we are looking for Shibboleth to enable access to license library content in a manner that is simplified and appropriate regardless of your network location.  In collaboration with the libraries, IT @ Hopkins will be deploying a production instance of Shibboleth with participation in the InCommon Federation in the summer of 2007.

Reference Portal

Information Technology @ Johns Hopkins (IT@JH) has partnered with the Eisenhower Library (MSEL) to research, develop, and deploy its very own portal environment.  MyJH will provide fast and easy access to many of the Enterprise Services offered by IT@JH, as well as several resources offered by the Milton S. Eisenhower Library (MSEL).  All of this through a single web interface which you can access, personalize, and maintain from anywhere at anytime.  JHEM Email, Calendaring, and JShare Web File Sharing are among the features that will be included in MyJH, and more will come. It is fully integreated with JHED and the Enterprise Authentication, and a majority of the the JHED Web functionality has been ported into MyJH.  However, since it is in a quasi-production state, authentication is actually sequentially tried against the production JHED Directory and the test JHED Directory (JHEDjr).

RefWorks

RefWorks is a Web-based bibliography and database manager that allows users to create their own personal database by importing references from text files or online databases. They can use these references in writing their papers and automatically format the paper and the bibliography in seconds.

RefWorks allows you to…

  • Organize and create a personal database online – no more index cards to write out and organize. Everything is done automatically as you import the reference into RefWorks.
  • Format bibliographies and manuscripts in seconds – this saves hours of typing time and decreases the number of errors in creating tedious bibliographies. Easily make changes to your paper and reformat in seconds.
  • Import references from a variety of databases using the already created Import Filters.
  • Searching your RefWorks database is fast and easy – RefWorks automatically creates author, descriptor and periodical indexes when importing so you just click on the word to perform the retrieval. Use Quick Search to search all fields for the most comprehensive results or Advanced Search to narrow your search to specific terms and fields.

Internet Student Information System (ISIS)

The Internet Student Information System (ISIS) is Johns Hopkins’ first university-wide, web-based student information system. It’s designed for you. If you’re an applicant, current student or graduate, you’ll get easy access to information about your admissions status, your financial aid, your grades and transcript, and your accounts with the university. And you’ll be able to register for courses online. If you’re a faculty member, you’ll be able to handle advising, course enrollment, grading and other tasks in real time. If you’re on staff in admissions, financial aid, the registrars’ offices or student accounts, you’ll handle routine tasks more efficiently, so you can focus on the big picture. The implementation of ISIS began in 2001, and should conclude sometime in 2005. Watch this site for the latest information on how ISIS affects you.

Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)

The Johns Hopkins University and the Johns Hopkins Health System are committed to excellence in education, research, and patient care. To achieve and maintain the highest level of expertise and knowledge in the field, continuing education is essential. Changes in federal regulations and Institutional guidelines can make compliance with federal and state law and Institutional requirements difficult. This web site was developed to assist faculty, staff, employees, students, residents, fellows and temporary staff in obtaining up-to-date information and to provide a basic review of Johns Hopkins compliance requirements.

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) is a single software application that serves the needs of people in finance as well as it does the people in human resources and supply chain. It attempts to integrate all departments and functions across the university and health system onto a single computer system that can serve all those different departments' particular needs.  Each of those departments typically has its own computer system optimized for the particular ways that the department does its work. But ERP combines them all together into a single, integrated software program that runs off a single database so that the various departments can more easily share information and communicate with each other. Utilizing the latest in system technology, that integrated approach can have a tremendous payback.

Internet2 Debuts at Johns Hopkins

Internet2 makes distance learning a reality.  This past November, members of Peabody's Professor Gustav Meier's conducting class participated in a real time Webcast in Hodson Hall, on the Homewood campus.  The state-of-the-art building is home to a distance learning room that can beam the world right into the classroom at Johns Hopkins in the blink of an eye, using new audio, video, and Internet 2 technology.
