Johns Hopkins Enterprise Network Architecture and Design offers two wireless networks: The "hopkins" wireless network is intended for use by Johns Hopkins faculty, staff, students, or anyone with a valid JHED ID. The "hopkins" wiereless network is built with many security features, including WPA-Enterprise, PEAP, and powerful 256 bit encryption. A high speed data link is provided to all the resources on the internal network. In addition, "hopkins" wireless uses Cisco Clean Access, which is commonly deployed at Universities throughout the country. The "JHGuestnet" network is for casual use by guests and visitors at any Hopkins Campus. In addition, "JHGuestnet" can be used for devices that do not meet the requirements for the "hopkins" wireless network. NOTE: Please see links to the right for additional wireless information including policies, coverage areas, Clean Access FAQ, and JHED information. To access the "hopkins" wireless network, your device must have an 802.11a/b/g wireless adapter, capable of using WPA-Enterprise with AES 256-bit encryption. Most cards manufactured within the past two years will be compatible with the "hopkins" architecture. The "hopkins" wireless network also requires that you have a current JHED ID. IT @ JH provides support for the following operating systems. Support for Linux and other mobile devices is on a best effort basis. The Apple iPhone and iPod Touch are currently unable to connect to the "hopkins" wireless network. These devices only support WPA-PSK. The "hopkins" wireless network requires the use of WPA-Enterprise. Apple will need to release an update with 802.1X support. Download the most recent operating system patches, updates and hotfixes for your platform (Windows, Mac, or Linux). Download updated firmware and drivers for your wireless hardware. Check your manufacturer's website for updates. If you are running Windows, make sure you have Symantec anti-virus installed and updated with the latest virus definitions. You can download the Corporate Edition of Symantec anti-virus software with a valid JHED ID. Please uninstall any other vendor's software BEFORE you install Symantec. Make sure the internal time and date are correct on your device. This allows for proper acceptance of our security certificate. In addition, all firewalls must be disabled before registration and enabled upon completion. Make sure your wireless card is enabled. See examples for XP, Vista, Mac.
The following are step-by step illustrated instructions in .pdf format. "JHGuestnet" is for casual use by guest and visitors to all Johns Hopkins Institutions. It is for anyone who does not have JHED access. JHGuestnet provides connectivity to the internet and limited functionality to outside applications. A list of currently allowed applications can be found here. Enable your wireless card and open your favorite internet browser. Just agree to the terms of use and you are connected. There is no registration and no configuration of the network in the operating system. It is that easy! Instructions can be found at the following link: JHGuestnet "jhmiradio" will still be available on the East Baltimore campus and select other locations. A phase-out of this network will be implemented in the near term. Please contact the Help Desk at 410-955-4357 to set up an appointment, if you need to have "jhmiradio" configured. The legacy presence of this network is intended for clinical devices unable to configure WPA-Enterprise. Please visit the following link for the allowed service ports. PLEASE NOTE: - Wireless networking for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT, and Windows 2000 are not supported.
- SMC EZ Wireless PC Cards are not compatible.
- MAC OS 10.1 w/CISCO 350 card is not supported.
- Laptops running Windows XP with any other Wireless External Card with 802.11b standard/128- bit WEP Encryption will be on a best effort basis.
Note: Windows XP caches (saves) user credentials, after a successful logon. You may need to remove this information because a password changed, someone else used the device, or you want to start over. There are two ways to accomplish this: - Download this file, extract the file and double-click it. This will remove your credentials from the registry.
- Remove "hopkins" from your Preferred Networks. See example.
